Smoke Alarm Sounds at WA Soldiers Home - No Resident Injuries

CITY — Orting

A fire alarm sounded around 2:10 pm in the Nursing Care Building at the Washington Soldiers Home in Orting.

All 93 residents from the Nursing Care Building were evacuated without incident.

Orting Valley Fire & Rescue responded with several other local departments. The all-clear was given by Orting Valley Fire & Rescue and all residents were returned to their rooms at approximately 3:30pm.

No resident injuries have been reported.  One staff member reported smoke inhalation and was treated by paramedics on the scene and released.

There were no flames, only smoke, so there is no fire damage to the building.  Most of the smoke was confined to the attic.

The cause of the smoke was an exhaust fan motor which overheated in the attic above the kitchen.  This motor will be replaced on 8/14/2015.

WDVA is extremely proud of the Soldiers Home Staff members who acted quickly and efficiently to evacuate each resident safely.  We regularly perform emergency evacuation drills and this was evident in their execution of the plans today.

WDVA would also like to thank Orting Valley Fire and Rescue and the very quick and thorough response they brought to ensure the Veterans, Spouses and Widows who call the Soldiers Home their Home, as well as our staff members, were safe.
