Spirit of '45 - 70th Anniversary of End of World War II

Olympia —Friday, August 14, is the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. The Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs will commemorate this historic event with a gathering at the Washington State World War II Memorial on the Capitol grounds in Olympia at 10:00 am.

Family members of Lieutenant William F. Heinen will be in attendance from Spokane to unveil his name on the Memorial, bringing the total of Washington state KIA to 5,848.

Special guest speakers Adolfo Capestany and Karl Schmidt will share the history of the State’s WWII Memorial dedicated on May 28, 1999, as well as the legacy given our state by the Washington State WWII Educational Foundation.

Secretary of State Kim Wyman will speak about how the state is continuing the preservation of the history of Washington’s ‘Greatest Generation’, and the launch of Washington Remembers Exhibit  at the SOS office on August 20.

Consul General Moon Duk-ho will be in attendance from the Republic of Korea Seattle Consulate, as an acknowledgment of the impact the end of World War II had on Korea’s restoration of independence.

The public is invited; there will be limited seating.
