On Saturday, November 9, 2024, at 11 am, a Veterans Day Ceremony will be held to honor Medal of Honor recipient Marvin Shields at Gardiner Community Cemetery (137 Gardiner Cemetery Rd, Gardiner). The United States Seabees will conduct a Veterans Day Service in memory of Marvin Shields. On September 13, 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor to Construction Mechanic Third Class Marvin Shields during a ceremony at the White House. Joan Shields-Bennett, his widow, received the medal on behalf of her late husband, the only Navy Seabee to receive the nation's highest award for valor.
