PRESS RELEASE

Request for Veterans Remembrance Emblem Fund Proposals Now Open

OLYMPIA, WA - The Governor's Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee (VAAC) is pleased to announce that grant proposals for veterans' memorials in Washington State are now being accepted. The application period begins July 23 and closes on August 30.

Funding for accepted proposals will be provided through the Veterans Remembrance Emblem Fund. Established in 1990, this fund is administered by the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs in partnership with the Department of Licensing. The Emblem Fund allows eligible veterans to purchase and display approved decals on their vehicle license plates through the Department of Licensing. The net fees collected from these decals are then deposited into a special account held by the state treasurer.

Under RCW 46.16.332, the VAAC is authorized to disburse funds from the Emblem Fund for various purposes. These include direct costs of contracting, contract administration, and project administration related to projects that pay tribute to living and deceased veterans. The funds can also be used for the upkeep and operations of existing memorials, as well as for land acquisition and construction of new memorials.

Comprised of 17 members, the VAAC serves as an advisory body to the governor and the director of the Department of Veterans Affairs. Its primary role is to provide guidance and recommendations on issues and programs concerning veterans.

To review the proposal requirements, interested parties can visit the official website of the Department of Veterans Affairs at http://www.dva.wa.gov/emblemfund.html.
