New Spokane Veterans Home: What You Need to Know
Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs (WDVA) is building a new Spokane Veterans Home to replace the current facility. The new home will provide safer, more comfortable, and more personalized care for Veterans.
A New Location Near VA Medical Care
In November 2025, WDVA completed the purchase of 41.5 acres adjacent to Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center in Spokane as the site for the Spokane Veterans Home replacement facility.
WDVA plans to replace the Spokane Veterans Home with a modern, homelike facility honoring the service and sacrifice of our Veterans while improving their health, safety, and quality of life.
This investment in a new Spokane Veterans Home reflects Washington State’s commitment to providing dignified and high-quality care for our Veterans. The site offers numerous benefits for both WDVA and the state of Washington:
-
Proximity to VA Medical Center – Its location near the Mann-Grandstaff VA Medical Center will reduce transportation costs, improve access to healthcare, and enhance response times.
-
Staff retention and recruitment – The site’s proximity to the existing facility allows WDVA to retain much of its current staff, while the modern design of the new facility is expected to attract additional healthcare professionals.
-
Supportive environment - The larger footprint will accommodate outdoor areas and a design that aligns with the federal VA’s small-house model, creating a more homelike environment.
-
Community and Partnership- This location is best suited to keep Veterans close to the greater Spokane area and ensure they have the ability to enjoy the surrounding community.
Why a New Spokane Veterans Home Is Needed
The existing Spokane Veterans Home faces significant limitations, including:
-
Restricted land footprint – The current site lacks sufficient outdoor areas for residents to take part in outdoor activities. Total parcel is approximately 1.75 acre.
-
Institution-like setting – Rooms are primarily shared, with two residents separated by a curtain, offering limited privacy.
-
Infection control challenges - Shared rooms and aging infrastructure complicate infection control procedures.
-
No memory care capabilities – The current facility cannot meet the growing need for memory care services for area Veterans.
-
Lack of outdoor environment – The facility provides no outdoor environment for residents to enjoy fresh air, walk the grounds, gather with family or friends, or engage in therapeutic outdoor activities. Additionally, the building layout does not allow for storage of wheelchairs, patient lifts, or adequate facilities for physical therapy and rehabilitation services.
How the New Home Will Improve Care
The new Spokane Veterans Home will be designed to feel more like a home than an institution.
It will offer:
-
Private rooms in a small-house model supported by the federal VA
-
Outdoor spaces for walking, relaxing, and therapeutic activities
-
A safer environment with modern infection control features
-
Space for memory care services
-
Improved areas for physical therapy and rehabilitation
-
A setting that supports dignity, independence, and quality of life
Project Status and Next Steps

-
Additional funding requested:
-
$146.4 million for full construction
