Honoring May as Military Spouse Appreciation Month

Washington State is home to more than 38,000 spouses of Active Duty, Reserve, and National Guard service members and an estimated 348,000 spouses of Veterans.

Military spouses are an integral part of our military’s readiness and bring invaluable talent to our State. Despite this, military spouses face challenges related to frequent moves and deployment that include high unemployment and financial instability. Washington State is committed to recognizing our military spouse community and ensuring they receive the resources they need.

The Military Spouse Initiative is part of your Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs and is focused on reducing and removing employment barriers for the military spouse community, ensuring military spouses are connected to resources, and advocating for military spouses at the local, state, and federal levels.

Governor Jay Inslee has proclaimed May to be #MilitarySpouseAppreciationMonth and recently signed the Military Spouse Employment Act to help expedite and provide temporary professional licensure for military spouses, promote military hiring among employers, and build awareness of the issues military spouses face.
