The Reentry Program for incarcerated veterans
This program addresses the needs of veterans’ incarcerated in Washington State correctional facilities, offering disability and pension claims assistance to veterans and their family members. Also provides referral to many resources to include housing, employment services, and education.
Why this program: Many of the veterans have come to the jail due to un-treated drug and alcohol issues, poverty, homelessness, or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. Many have never connected with their earned benefits.
The program provides:

reinstatement of benefits after releasing from incarceration

facilitates communications between Department of Corrections and the Federal VA

assessment and referral to the Puget Sound VA Health Care System for treatment including drug, alcohol and mental health counseling,

job referral and placement services

assistance with apportionment to veteran families; Pension and Compensation disability adjustments; and updating mailing address
